Chuck Wagon Recipes:

  1. One of the most important jobs on any cattle drive was feeding the cowboys. A chuck wagon is pictured in the illustration. This wagon had all the necessary food and equipment to cook meals for the cowhands.
  2. Check this Web site for some authentic cowboy recipes.

CAUTION: Some names of recipes use inappropriate language:

  3. Plan a cowboy meal with your class. Rewrite recipes to accommodate the number of students in the class.
  4. Recruit volunteers to make recipes, help with setup, and clean up. Some cast-iron Dutch ovens and skillets, as well as cowboy attire, would help lend an air of authenticity to the meal.
  5. Discuss the nutritional content of the cowboy meals. Do cowboy meals follow the food guide pyramid? Check this link: www.mypyramid.gov
