New Orleans Architecture:

  1. McClintock’s illustration shows some typical architecture of the French Quarter of New Orleans. The following links provide additional views, history, and architectural notes on New Orleans’s historic building styles. Note the ironwork balconies as depicted in the illustration:

  2. Beautiful ironwork adorns many buildings in New Orleans. Have students do a Google Image search for New Orleans ironwork.
  3. A model of a building surrounded by typical ironwork is available at the following Web link. The models are too complex for young students to build, but students could add a flat section of ironwork to their own drawing of a building. Download and print paper models of buildings and ironwork at:

    www.haunteddimensions.raykeim.com/index380.html

Ironwork appears on pages 19, 20, 22, 23, 24, and 25 of the PDF document entitled "New Orleans Square Paper Model Kit."
  4. Have students draw a house or building of their own design on a piece of paper. Remind students to match the size of their building to the printout of the ironwork. They can cut out ironwork details from the printout and add them to their drawings.
  5. You could turn your classroom into a small New Orleans jazz festival by playing some jazz music and serving some gumbo.
